Discovery Leads to New Hope for Colon Cancer Treatment

A new medical discovery by more than 200 researchers investigating colon cancer tumors may be able to lead to new, powerful treatments for this almost inevitably fatal disease.

By attacking the discovered weak spots of these deadly tumors, scientists are looking to halt the genetic aberrations that allow the cancer to spread and thrive, according to The New York Times.

Although colon cancer research is progressing rapidly, it will still take some time for treatment of this disease that kills about 50,000 Americans a year to catch up. Some drugs that are used to block mutations in other forms of cancer, such as melanoma, may be able to assist in stopping the spread of colon cancer mutations as well.

As Gina Kolata writes, “The possibility of helping selected colon cancer patients with drugs that are already on the market ‘is actually thrilling,’” according to Dr. Raju Kucherlapati, the principal investigator for the colon cancer project and a professor of genetics and of medicine at Harvard Business School. Gene Aberrations Seen as Path to Stop Colon Cancer

Steve Crandall, a top-rated medical malpractice attorney throughout Ohio and Kentucky, believes this study is a great breakthrough for a disease that, once spread, has only a 5 percent survival rate after five years.

“It has long been believed that colon cancer could be attacked and treated through the evaluation of genetic markers,” says Crandall. “This study is a breakthrough in helping physicians detect colon cancer earlier and for patients who will be able to fight this cancer more effectively.”
