Overused Medical Tests? Doctors Issue Potentially Dangerous List

Major medical specialty groups have recommended that doctors greatly reduce their use of 90 "widely used but largely unnecessary tests and treatments", including echocardiograms and early induction of labor.

Each medical specialty society participating in the initiative, including the American Academy of Pediatrics and American Geriatrics Society, offered up five procedures that patients should question that have little evidence of benefit and may cause harm.

"The goal is to begin to change attitudes both from the public side and the physician side that sometimes less is better," said Daniel Wolfson, executive vice president of the American Board of Internal Medicine Foundation. Read the full details of the list of "overused medical tests" here:

Doctor Groups Issue List of Overused Medical Tests

While no physician should order unneeded tests for a patient, putting a list together like this is dangerous for patient care. It may encourage a care provider to not order a study when it is, in fact, warranted. Patients need to be informed of all of their options and their risks.
