Quality of Nursing Home Care Lacking in Kentucky

The quality of care in Kentucky's nursing homes is severely lacking; two out of every five nursing homes in the state are ranked below or much below average by the United States Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

Since 2009, health care citations have listed 1,821 deficiencies directly related to resident rights or care within the state's facilities, with problems ranging from malnourishment and broken bones to sexual assaults and untreated bedsores. In 2012, Kentucky ranked first in overall federal fines at $2,071,469.

One facility in particular is now the most heavily fined nursing home in U.S. recent history: $500,000 in fines for life-threatening negligence related to resident falls and injuries, even though it touted a specialized fall prevention program.

Despite these facts, nursing home owners and operators are enjoying record profits, most of which is subsidized by the American taxpayer through Medicare and Medicaid reimbursements. Read the full details here:

Improve care at Kentucky nursing homes

Unfortunately, nursing home residents are some of the most helpless members of our society, and their abuse and neglect often goes unreported. The corporations that own nursing homes want to increase their profits further at the expense of a resident's right to be compensated if he or she is abused or neglected.

If you or someone you love has been injured due to nursing home abuse or negligence, call the professionals at Crandall & Pera Law for a free case evaluation.

If Kentucky voters want safer and better care for themselves and their loved ones, instead of making corporations rich at the expense of those who can least afford it, they should call their State Representative at 1-800-372-7181 and ask them to oppose SB 9.
