5 Questions You Should Be Asking Your Doctor

In order to make the most of your annual physical exam, you should be spending more time having a conversation with your doctor in order to build a relationship rather than just having your body examined.

Dr. Richard Besser, M.D., who spent 18 years at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, offers the top five questions to ask your doctor at your next appointment:

  1. What is a BMI and what is mine? Body mass index tells you how appropriate your weight is for your height and can tell you whether you are at increased risk for many disorders, including diabetes and heart disease.

  2. Which screening tests do I truly need? Recommendations on screening have changed a lot. Talk about what is recommended for you and decide what you need.

  3. Do I need any shots? There are 14 vaccinations that are recommended for some adults. If you don't ask the question, many doctors will forget to review what you've had and what you need. Why put yourself at risk for an illness that can be prevented?

  4. Is there anything in my family history I should be worried about? First thing to do is ask your doctor to help you compile a detailed family history. Then once you have that information, go over it and look for clues that might put your health at risk.

  5. If I change one lifestyle habit, what should it be? The key to good health lies in healthy behaviors. Look to your doctor for advice on how to exercise more, eat better, stop smoking, get some sleep and control your stress levels.
