Complaints about abuse and neglect in Ohio nursing homes have nearly doubled in the last year, according to Attorney General Mike Dewine's office.
Dewine's Medical Fraud Control Unit has opened 131 cases so far in 2013, compared with 74 in the same period last year. This includes 63 new cases in the month of June alone, according to The Columbus Dispatch.
The office's investigators recently used surveillance cameras to uncover shocking treatment of residents in a Zanesville nursing home, leading to the state's decision to shut down the facility. DeWine says he believes most nursing homes in the state provide excellent care, but his office will aggressively investigate nursing homes that provide residents with inadequate or abusive care.
