The last few days of 2016 were a rollercoaster ride for the ages; the year claimed so many prominent public figures that a GoFundMe page was started to protect Betty White for the remainder of the year. The slings and arrows continued to fly right up until the very end, making for a Christmas miracle that one Ohio family will never forget.
An un-survivable accident
Just two days before Christmas, first responders were called to an early morning crash site in Luzerne Country involving a tractor-trailer wreck and vehicle entrapment. WNEP 16 reported, “As… [fusion_builder_container hundred_percent=”yes” overflow=”visible”][fusion_builder_row][fusion_builder_column type=”1_1″ background_position=”left top” background_color=”” border_size=”” border_color=”” border_style=”solid” spacing=”yes” background_image=”” background_repeat=”no-repeat” padding=”” margin_top=”0px” margin_bottom=”0px” class=”” id=”” animation_type=”” animation_speed=”0.3″ animation_direction=”left” hide_on_mobile=”no” center_content=”no” min_height=”none”][Hanover Township Fire Chief Joe Temarantz] drove his ambulance down Nuangola hill towards the scene of the wreck, he saw tire tracks, twisted metal, and shredded rubber all over the road. He later learned that the car that was wedged beneath the tractor trailer was dragged for more than a quarter of a mile.”
The trail of debris strewn across the highway led first responders to expect the worst, but when they arrived, the mangled car was empty. The family of four sitting on a nearby embankment were not onlookers; the parents and two young children were in the accidents. They had escaped certain death almost entirely unscathed; all four were released from a nearby hospital just hours later. Chief Temarantz remembered the father telling his child not to worry about the Christmas presents inside the car because their real present had just happened.
The impossible can happen
This particular underride crash was unusual mostly because the victims survived at all. When a passenger vehicle travels under a tractor-trailer at highway speeds, catastrophic injuries and death are the most common results. The guards design to prevent underride incursion have caused decapitation and penetration injuries, and the other forces involved have caused brain and spinal cord injuries and bone and tissue damage that are either fatal or require a lifetime of rehabilitation.
This family of four truly experienced a Christmas miracle; it’s uncommon for the victims of commercial truck accidents to walk away at all, let alone with nary a scratch. More often, families lose loved ones or watch them cling to life as medical professionals struggle to repair severe injuries.
