The trail of debris strewn across the highway led first responders to expect the worst, but when they arrived, the mangled car was empty. The family of four sitting on a nearby embankment were not onlookers; the parents and two young children were in the accidents. They had escaped certain death almost entirely unscathed; all four were released from a nearby hospital just hours later. Chief Temarantz remembered the father telling his child not to worry about the Christmas presents inside the car because their real present had just happened.

This particular underride crash was unusual mostly because the victims survived at all.
