While in Labor, What Are Things to Watch Out For? EFM
EFM stands for
electronic fetal monitoring. That's the machine directly next to you that is giving a print out of your baby's heart rate on top, and your contractions on the bottom. Typically, you wear – Mom wears – a belt across her stomach that provides the information for that print out.
The three things that are important about EFM, make sure that it is always running – that it is continuous. The physicians need to look at your EFM strip and look back and forwards as you're going through your delivery. The second thing is to make sure that the nurses and doctors are in fact looking at your EFM. Make sure that when they come into the room that they're examining it, looking at it, and looking backwards to see how your baby was doing. The third thing is very important: if you feel uncomfortable about any part of your delivery, or you feel the EFM doesn't look or sound normal to you, please ask your nurse or doctor what is going on with the EFM, and they'll explain it to you.
