Fatal motorcycle accidents are on the rise

On Behalf of | Jun 2, 2022 | Injuries

Riding a motorcycle has many benefits for commuters, but even the most experienced motorcyclist knows dangers exist. Motorcycles do not provide the protection other vehicles deliver. Therefore, additional caution on Ohio roads becomes necessary. Experience often tells motorcyclists that even the most cautious enthusiast can end up in an accident. Statistics paint a clear picture of motorcycle fatalities to prove this notion.

Deadly motorcycle accidents increase

The insurance entity ValuePenguin published research that may act as a stark warning to motorcyclists. The study revealed an 11% increase in motorcycle fatalities between 2019 and 2020. Certain geographic regions had more crashes than others, but the dangers exist in all 50 states.

The report noted that speeding factors heavily into motorcycle collisions, as many likely expect. When a motorcyclist or car driver goes beyond the speed limit, they do so at the risk of reducing reaction time and otherwise compromising safety.

Liabilities and motorcycle fatalities

When a motorcyclist zooms out onto the road, the action could increase the chances of a crash. An investigator may ask whether the motorcyclist looked to see if the coast was clear or if they were under the influence. Of course, there may be times when it is okay to zoom out onto the road. Unfortunately, the motorcyclist might not know a drunk driver is about to go through a stop sign not too far ahead.

Police reports compiled after fatal motorcycle accidents may suggest someone was at fault. Such reports and other evidence could establish a compelling case for a liability lawsuit.

The civil litigation could involve a wrongful death claim, which might provide desperately needed compensation to surviving family members. Victims who survive a near-fatal crash might seek compensation for their injuries as well.
