Brain injury victims and Life Core Technologies, a Cleveland-based medical device company, recently got a major boost thanks to a $250,000 commitment by nonprofit venture development organization JumpStart Inc. to develop a patented disposable cerebral cooling system, according to the PR Newswire.
The Excel Cerebral Cooling System device will act as a cervical collar that immobilizes the patient’s neck while simultaneously drawing heat away from the brain, allowing metabolism to slow down, cell membranes to stabilize and any inflammation of the brain to reduce.
“Mild therapeutic hypothermia is needed as soon as possible after cardiac arrest, traumatic brain injury or stroke to minimize injury to the brain,” JumpStart’s Lee Poseidon said. “This is an easy-to-use, non-invasive, highly effective solution to help decrease the potential long-term neurologic damage these already life-threatening incidents can cause.”
Thanks to the investment, Life Core Technologies plans to advance additional scientific evidence of results for their device to be used by emergency first responders and in hospital intensive care units. Read the complete details here:
