18-Wheeler Accident Shuts Down I-80 Interchange; Driver Charged With OVI
An 18-wheeler leaving Truck World in Hubbard closed the I-80/Route 62 interchange overnight on March 24 after the driver struck several utility poles. The downed poles and wires created dangerous conditions that were exacerbated by high winds and heavy rainfall. The driver, Adam Plaxco, 36, was arrested and charged with operating a vehicle while impaired (OVI) and failure to maintain control of a motor vehicle.
DWI, DUI, and OVI: What is the difference?
In Ohio, OVI is an umbrella term for operating a vehicle under the influence of drugs or alcohol. A DUI or DWI is applied to drivers operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol. Plaxco’s negligence in operating his truck under the influence of alcohol placed first responders in harms way and created major problems for Friday’s commuters. WKBN 27 reported that the Route 62 interchanges remained blocked for more than 18 hours, causing a massive disruption in traffic. Thankfully, no one was injured during the accident or the resulting cleanup.
The incident is a graphic illustration of the force that big rigs represent. Even at low speed, the truck was able to snap massive utility poles like toothpicks. This relatively minor incident was enough to shut down a major highway interchange for more than two days.
