Two top reproductive health organizations say the federal government is not doing enough to keep people safe from chemicals that cause a range of health problems, from birth defects to diabetes.
The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) and the American Society of Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) released a joint statement to raise awareness of some of the environmental threats that chemicals cause.
"There is a backdrop of disease processes that have increased in the past 30-40 years," said Dr. Jeanne Conry, president of ACOG. "In that backdrop we have seen an increase in the release of chemicals into the environment."
The statement calls for doctors to help patients reduce their exposure to chemicals, but just what those chemicals are is another matter altogether. Some of the chemicals mentioned, including mercury and lead, have been clearly shown to be harmful, while the evidence of bisphenol A and phthalates is less clear. Read the full article here:
