Free Pilates Class Helps Breast Cancer Survivors

A physical therapy center in southern Indiana will begin offering free Pilates classes this week for breast cancer survivors to help women bounce back from the physical and emotional fallout from the disease, according to an article in the Courier-Journal

Shoulder problems, physical imbalances, muscle tightness and reduced strength are among the health issues that breast cancer patients and survivors sometimes contend with, according to Susie Stewart, instructor of the class at Floyd Memorial Physical Therapy Charlestown Road. The American Cancer Society recommends cancer survivors get at least 150 minutes of exercise a week, with strength training at least two days a week.

The one-hour class is based upon the Pink Ribbon Program that was started when a Pilates instructor was dismayed that breast cancer survivors were being discharged without a plan for physical therapy or rehabilitation. Read the full story here:
