A “Sod” Story About Catastrophic Tire Failure

In early November, a commercial truck carrying several pallets of fresh sod rolled off state Route 235 in Bethel Township after a tire failure. The driver, who has strong roots in the community, was shaken but not injured. The truck itself rolled over, leading to a considerable traffic jam at the time.

Cargo spills get a lot of attention in the lighter section of the news; puns are fun, and we’ve been guilty of our fair share in the past. Just this past June, we wrote about some of the strangest commercial truck cargo spills we’ve ever come across. We enjoyed that list ourselves, but the real effects of commercial cargo spills are no laughing matter; the resulting road conditions can have catastrophic consequences for you and your loved ones.

Oddly enough, it was around this time last year that we wrote about the big risks of big tire blowouts. That post described how commercial trucks often use retreaded tires to save money, and how those retreaded tires are far more likely to fail at highway speeds than new tires. Exploding tires directly caused 223 deaths between 2009 and 2013. We talked about how those tires behave on big rigs, but never discussed the impact a tire explosion at highway speeds could have on smaller (but still big) commercial vehicles.

The fact that no one was injured is truly extraordinary, especially considering that even this smaller commercial truck could have caused serious damage to any passenger vehicle in its path, and led to serious injuries for the passengers themselves. When any component of a big truck fails, the consequences can be dire for other motorists. Insurance is designed to protect you when accidents happen, but sometimes it isn’t enough to cover all of the damages. When it isn’t, you’ll need a skilled truck accident attorney to help fight for you.

Experienced legal counsel is designed to protect you from what happens after an accident.
