The Dayton Daily News reports that the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs paid out $940,000 in cases related to the deaths of eight patients at the Dayton VA Medical Center, which came under scrutiny after allegations that a dentist at a clinic had used improper hygiene for years, according to public records obtained by a newspaper.
Records requested by the Dayton Daily News reveal the center in southwestern Ohio has faced 72 medical malpractice claims since 2007, including those related to eight deaths between 2005 and 2008. There are pending claims over two deaths in 2009 and 2010. Twenty-two of the 72 claims involved the dental clinic, and most of those appeared to be linked to the infection control scandal that came to light last year, the newspaper said. Sixteen pending claims linked to the clinic seek a total of nearly $6.7 million.
